Learn How You Learn
Educational psychologists have identified three primary methods of learning. Visual learners, who learn best from seeing and reading; auditory learners, who learn best from listening and speaking, and kinesthetic learners, who learn best from touching and doing.
You can find a good resource for identifying which one of three categories you fit into here.

Adapt Your Studies to Your Learning Style
Once you’ve identified what learning styles you fit into, you can then adapt how your study to best fit how you learn best.
According to Education Planner, different learners can take different approaches such as:
Visual learners can:
- Sit near the front of the classroom.
- Have your eyesight checked on a regular basis.
- Use flashcards to learn new words.
- Try to visualize things that you hear or things that are read to you.
- Write down keywords, ideas, or instructions.
- Draw pictures to help explain new concepts and then explain the pictures.
- Color code things.
- Avoid distractions during study times.
Auditory learners can:
- Sit where you can hear.
- Have your hearing checked on a regular basis.
- Use flashcards to learn new words; read them out loud.
- Read stories, assignments, or directions out loud.
- Record yourself spelling words and then listen to the recording.
- Have test questions read to you out loud.
- Study new material by reading it out loud.
Kinesthetic learners can:
- Participate in activities that involve touching, building, moving, or drawing.
- Do lots of hands-on activities like completing art projects, taking walks, or acting out stories.
- It’s OK to chew gum, walk around, or rock in a chair while reading or studying.
- Use flashcards and arrange them in groups to show relationships between ideas.
- Trace words with your finger to learn spelling (finger spelling).
- Take frequent breaks during reading or studying periods (frequent, but not long).
- It’s OK to tap a pencil, shake your foot, or hold on to something while learning.
- Use a computer to reinforce learning through the sense of touch.
Get Prepared
Once you’ve adjusted your study habits to your learning style, you need to change how you approach studying as a whole. There are some preparatory steps you can take to ensure you get the most out of your studies:
- Get enough sleep to allow your brain to process the information.
- Eat healthy food and drink lots of water.
- Don’t rely on caffeine too much, it can diminish your ability to concentrate.
- Find a quiet place to study to limit your distractions.
Get Organized
Organizing your study materials means you don’t get lost and can get straight down to studying without having to navigate a mess of random bits of paper. Some techniques you can use to help you organize are:
- Buy a day planner or calendar to plot out all your assignments or test dates.
- Schedule breaks into your study schedule to let your mind relax a little.
- Organize your notes into colored folders or audio playlists.
- Be very specific when naming computer documents and index them so they can be quickly searched for.
