In our last article on Podcasts for Aspiring Legal Assistants, we gave you four excellent podcasts to fill you time with and pique your interest in working as a legal assistant in the criminal justice system.
While ordinary, those four podcasts would have kept the average person occupied for quite some time, we recognize that very little about the last few months has been ordinary and that we’ve all had a lot more free time recently.
So, if you’re running out of episodes of Serial or Stay Tuned with Preet, don’t panic, we’re back with more excellent podcasts for aspiring legal assistants.

Court Junkie
While Court Junkie might have a little bit more Dateline than you might expect in a podcast about judicial procedure, Jillian Pandav’s in-depth breakdown of the cases she covers, including reviews of court documents, interviews with those close to the case, and even recordings taken in the courtroom are an excellent snapshot of legal process in the US for those interested in a career in the legal field.
Women & Crime
Criminologists Meghan Sacks and Amy Shlosberg are the hosts of Direct Appeal, a podcast that takes on the case of Melanie McGuire, a woman who’s spent thirteen years serving a life sentence for the murder of her husband and whose case is based almost entirely on circumstantial evidence.
In their new podcast, Women & Crime, the duo study women who have been victims of crime, and those who have committed crimes, and those who work in the criminal justice system and use a criminologist’s lens to look at how women are treated in the criminal justice system, the causes of female crime and victimization, as well as cover cases in which women have been wrongfully convicted and exonerated.
Legal Wars
As much as a podcast about two squads of battle-hardened lawyers laying into each other with briefcases sounds entertaining, unfortunately, that’s not what Legal Wars is about (it would make a better television show anyway).
Legal Wars actually, puts you inside the jury box of some of the most famous court cases in American history, bringing you the drama, the larger-than-life characters, and the real-world impact these cases had on our society, all backed up by extensive interviews and court transcripts.
Court Appointed
Court Appointed is a great podcast for those trying to get a feel for if a career in the legal field is right for them. The show is hosted by Lawyer Mike Meadows and his non-lawyer brother-in-law Tommy Smirl and the pair discuss everyday legal issues in a manner that is both accessible to the legal layman and still detailed enough to be insightful and useful.
